Many customers have approached me about pay per click and Google Adwords. I usually begin by explaining the basic differences between pay per click and organic search engine rankings. Organic search engine rankings are based on the "on page" and "off page" factors of the website. On page factors being the keywords that appear on the web page, both in meta tags and content. Off page factors are based on other websites linking to your website. The other factors that contribute to a websites rankings are the age of the website, which is not a factor that can be manipulated. Basically, the older websites are regarded as more reliable and authentic. As such, newer websites have quiet a bit of work and time ahead of themselves before they really see the rankings they want. Pay per click on the other hand does not depend on the actual website and require much less time and effort. A Google Adwords account can be created in minutes and so long as you have a good credit card you can place your website up on the top position for any keyword you want. Of course you have to pay for that position. Keyword bidding is rarely understood by my clients. They usually lose interest by the time I start talking about on page and off page factors. And want to simply place $500 on Google Adwords, like they were playing slots in Atlantic City. Simply put the token in and pull the lever. Nevermind what that $500 is suppose to buy them. I guess the real problem is that most of the business people have very little, if any ,real understanding of how the internets work, and more disturbing is the complete lack of willingness to understand. When they find out that it requires time, energy, and money, they usually give up on any grand idea they had of revolutionizing the interwebs and getting filthy rich.
